How Long Can Cats Go Without Water? | How do you know your cat is dehydrated

How Long Can Cats Go Without Water?

How Long Can Cats Go Without Water? Lets dive into this commonly asked question from cat owners.

Humans and animals cannot survive without water. Your Cat is not an exception. Some people believe that cats have come from desert climates and they can survive longer without water.

If you believe this crazy theory then, please change it now..

Like humans, cats will not survive long without water. It is worth mentioning that seventy-five per cent of your cat's body is made of water. Just imagine how a cat will survive without water when more than half of his/her body is water only. Yes, they can survive long even weeks without food, but NOT without water.

Cats can survive without water only for three days. Humans can also survive for three days. But after three days, your pet will need more care and attention to get back to normal life. Dehydration will set in FAST. So, never experiment with your cat and do not make your tiny friend suffer without drinking water.

How Much Water Does Your Pet Cat Need?

You can offer your pet water whenever you find him/her thirsty. Besides, the size of your cat and food habits will decide the amount of water your cat needs to stay healthy. When the size is big, your cat will need more water. If your cat eats mostly dry food, you will have to offer more water for smooth digestion.

If the food is watery, you do not need to offer extra water. If your pet is super active and keeps playing all the time, you will have to offer water more often. You will have to observe the urine of your pet. Regular urination means your cat is consuming an adequate amount of the water.

Signs of Dehydration

Dehydration can be harmful and life-threatening in some conditions. When your pet does not have access to water for a long, he/she might develop signs of dehydration. If you notice any sign, take your cat to the vet immediately to avoid a more serious condition.

The key sign of dehydration is skin tenting. You can simply pinch the skin above the shoulder of your cat. While releasing the skin, it should go back into the place just like a rubber band. However, the skin will move slow if your cat is dehydrated. When it forms like a tent, this is the sign that your cat is severely dehydrated.

Also, your cat will look tired, listless, and lethargic. Your cat will not eat food and gums will feel dry. All these signs warrant an immediate visit to your vet.

What Happens If Your Cat Does Not Drink Enough Water?

First, your pet will be dehydrated. After a few days of dehydration, your little friend might suffer from hepatic failure. Next, the muscle mass will start breaking down. This condition is known as catabolization. This is very painful and that will gradually take your pet to an awful death.

Your pet’s water intake will decide the quality of his/her life. Make sure that your cat has always access to water.  Even if you are leaving your home only for an hour or two, always have water available for your pet.
